No Dust Today!

Share

DustWe have had yet more rain overnight. Despite the path outside the farmhouse being dry now (04:35 Saturday morning!), it will be a couple of days before the crops are dry enough to harvest again. So the giant combines will stay silent (the picture of my neighbours combine was taken with my drone on Wednesday evening) for a couple of days, however there’s no peace for the wicked…

There’ll be no dust on the fields today,
no harvesting wheat or making hay!
This is August unless you forget,
all the crops are soaking wet.

But for those with vast spreading lands,
no chance to rest their busy hands,
no extra sleep from work non-stop,
they’re preparing ground for next year’s crop!

(the smaller farmer, who tells this tale,
is preparing to host a car boot sale!)

Have a great weekend and I’ll see you all on the other side!

Meeting and Making Friends!

Share

FriendsThis morning I am cheating. Every month I place a rhyming advert for the car boot sale in a local magazine (On Your Doorstep – Baldock). Last month’s was written very quickly on deadline day, I almost wrote it without thinking. Re-reading it this morning I suddenly realised that it rather summed up the car boot sale and what I think is our greatest achievement over twenty-four years…

Many go to the Boot Sale,
Not just to sell or buy,
But meet up with old friends,
And say ‘Hello’ or ‘Hi!’
They have a cup of coffee,
maybe something to eat,
They always meet on Saturdays,
be there every week!
They say it’s always friendly,
I believe it’s true,
So next Saturday we’re hoping,
We might see you there too!

Oh to be a Farmer!

Share

Over the HedgeThere is a very nasty condition that affects almost all farmers. It comprises of an inability to drive in the countryside without looking over the hedge to see what other farmers are doing. In the mainly-arable East of England it is at its height at this time of year…

The Cherrys have their combine out,
So have other farmers.
The Crosses are harvesting,
and so are the Palmers!

I’d better dash home again,
to see if harvest is near.
Carry out a moisture test,
from grain rubbed from the ear!

No it isn’t ready,
combining I can’t go.
Strange there is no difference,
from an hour ago!

To be on the safe side I think I’d better check again as I can hear a combine in the distance…!

The Effect of Too Much Paperwork!

Share

Yesterday I had another hard day in the office. I realise that many spend their working lives in such surroundings, but I signed up to be outside in the fresh air, hoeing mangles (or whatever ‘proper farmers used to do). I needed fluid intake to concentrate. Unfortunately I over indulged…

Last night there was a mighty storm,
as wild as wild could be,
the whole house was lightened up,
was like day you see!
Thunder crashed and lightening cracked,
I was wide awake,
and in the middle of the night,
I was hungry needed cake!
I tried my best to get to sleep,
My mind like a machine,
Tumbling thoughts around my brain,
A result of excess caffeine!

Operators Manual for UAV course almost finished. The fresh air outside is only hours away! Have a great weekend!

The Cereal Bowl of Life!

Share

CerealThis morning while filling my bowl with cereal, it over-filled and the dogs rejoiced and cleared up the floor. I suddenly realized that my helping was probably greedy and, if needed, I could always have second helping having completed the first. Needless to say, having completed the bowlful the last thing I wanted was a second…

There’s never enough room in the bowl,
for the cereal I want to eat!
There’s never enough time in the day,
for my list of jobs to complete!
It may sound like I’m ungrateful,
a dissatisfied ancient bore,
But at least I’m vertical and breathing,
How could I ask for more?

It’s Thursday again! If you know where they have hidden the rest of the week, please let me know as my list of jobs seems never-ending.

Driving Over Lemons!

Share

Lemon pieLast night I enjoyed a tarte au citron for supper (following excellent meatballs made by my ‘demi-Italien’ friend Tony). Suddenly, without warning, I remembered a seller who made an annual trip to the car boot sale and I realised with shock that it must be at least ten years since I had seen him…

A man from Spain,
used to visit his mum,
who lived in the Midlands,
not far from ‘Brum’.
Before he left,
home on his trip,
from his garden,
fresh lemons he’d pick.
On his stall,
freshest fruit you’d see,
gone in an instant,
some for me.
So Señor limón,
where have you gone?
I remember your lemons,
though you have moved on!

The Three-Wheeled Coffee Machine

Share

Coffee WagonWhile waiting to pick someone up at Baldock station yesterday morning I was amazed to see almost every traveller stop to buy a coffee from a small three-wheeled coffee stall. Thinking about it later, I realised that small entrepreneurial outlets like this should be applauded. It exemplifies someone seeing a gap in the market and working hard to fill it…

Reading a classic Neville Shute,
as part of the daily commute,
a coffee sublime,
will suit you just fine,
followed by a portion of fruit!

The Farmer’s Classroom!

Share

farmersYesterday a group of farmers came to the farm to have a farm walk and discuss complicated new regulations and possibilities concerning on-farm environment. Even though most attendees broadly agreeded with everything that was said about protecting the environment, I wondered if the same rules and regulations would be accepted by our European ‘partners’…

Farmers sit silently in a draughty shed,
Listening to yet more rules with dread,
In a government office a man named ‘Fred’,
Doesn’t think it important to have food or bread.

He’s never seen a farm except in Emmerdale,
Never been outside in snow, rain or hail,
He thinks only footballers are called ‘bale’,
“We’d just import food if farming were to fail”

They wouldn’t put up with this in Paris or Rome,
Driving tractors, around the streets they’d roam,
The police would then cover them all in foam,
They all know: “Fair Trade begins at home!”

With many thanks to those who spend their lives attempting to explaining the latest European/British dictats without much thanks or praise.

The Three Cormorants

Share

CormorantThe other day I saw a sight to anger any fisherman. Three cormorants were swimming down a river, line abreast, looking for their supper. These birds are natures finest fisherman, however they operate without any control or restraint. As a non-fisherman I was in awe of their skills…

Three bold fishermen,
all in a row,
fishing from mid-stream,
is all they know!
They don’t need a licence,
don’t need hooks,
all they have learnt,
is not from books!
But when they go fishing,
anyone can see,
of one thing they’re sure,
there’s always fish for tea!

The coarse fishing season starts tomorrow 16th of June here in the UK.

The Sea Bass Twins!

Share

Sea Bass TwinsMy grand-daughter and I were standing at a fish counter the other day when we noticed some twins. Lying on ice on a hot day seemed an attractive proposition and they looked as if they were enjoying themselves by the broad grins on their faces. However looks can be deceptive…

Fish A and Fish B,
Were far from the sea,
On a very hot day in June.
Fish A said “it’s nice,
To be resting on ice,
I hope we’re not chosen too soon!”

“Look at those folk,
it must be a joke,
In this heat they may possibly swoon!”
Fish B with a fin,
Comforted him,
Knowing they would be chosen by noon!
